My apologies for the delay between postings (especially to you Benny). Been busy around here. But while I was tending to other matters, Petro-Canada has been piloting a cool new toy which is worth taking a look at. If you live in or around Toronto or Vancouver, you can access up to the minute gas prices at Petro-Canada locations on our website.
We first started the pilot in Toronto and then added Vancouver as both areas have seen some of the most volatile prices due to competition in the last few years. The part I like is that it also breaks down how much tax is included in that per litre price. For example, if you live downtown Toronto and want to head to our site at Jarvis and Richmond, just use the Site Locator on the website and up pops the price...along with all the other services avaiable at that site.
As I'm writing this, the price at that site is 105.2 cents per litre, which includes 29.7 cents in tax (GST, Federal Excise Tax and Provincial Fuel Taxes). In Vancouver, looking at a similar site downtown on Burrard Street, the price at that site is 109.7 cents per litre, which includes 36.7 cents in tax (same taxes as above, plus a 12 cent per litre urban transit tax).
There are other third-party websites out there that let you compare gas prices, but they rely on people sending information out of personal interest. The information usually comes from anonymous sources and can be out of date by the time it's posted. By using this tool, you get the prices straight from the source and it's updated every few minutes.
We may roll this initiative out to other cities, but are still looking at the feasibility. If you think it may be useful, there is a feedback form on the Site Locator that you can fill out. To me, anything you can accomplish without even changing out of your trackpants is progress.
